PFAS Filtration for Foodservice: Requirements and Evidence Checklist

PFAS Filtration for Foodservice: Requirements and Evidence Checklist

PFAS-related filtration procurement starts with the water report, the substances to be addressed and evidence for the proposed finished filter. A general carbon, resin or membrane description is not proof that a particular cartridge meets a project requirement over its service life.

Read the EU parameters accurately

Directive (EU) 2020/2184 lists 0.10 micrograms per litre for Sum of PFAS and 0.50 micrograms per litre for PFAS Total. Annex I describes the different parameters and allows Member States to use either one or both, subject to its stated conditions. Article 25 sets 12 January 2026 as the relevant transitional date. Read the applicable national implementation and current requirements rather than assuming every jurisdiction applies both parameters in the same way.

Translate a requirement into a testable filter brief

Identify the inlet-water results, relevant substances, required outlet specification, flow and expected use. Ask how the chosen configuration has been evaluated under stated test conditions, including the capacity or replacement point supported by the evidence. Do not substitute a chlorine-reduction claim for evidence about a different substance.

Keep the treatment approach separate from a product promise

EPA describes activated carbon, ion exchange and high-pressure membranes among treatment technologies used for PFAS reduction, with performance affected by the treatment conditions and compounds involved. That technology overview is a starting point for questions, not a performance claim for a Honlly Hydro model.

Questions for a foodservice or coffee project

  1. What current water report and target requirement define the project?
  2. Which exact model, cartridge and media configuration is proposed?
  3. What claim, test conditions, flow and capacity are supported by the supplied evidence?
  4. What installation, sampling and replacement process will be used?
  5. Which party will confirm applicable market requirements and the final claim wording?

A coffee machine’s inlet requirements and a contaminant-reduction objective must both be considered in the project brief. Do not infer drinking-water suitability from a stage count, a media name or an edited product image.

Use the project documentation

For a custom cartridge, provide the water report, application, connection drawing and evidence requirements. The selection guide and source notes explain the distinction between supplier specifications and configuration-specific evidence.
